Nexcelle is developing engine nacelle systems for both commercial aircraft and business jets – applying the capabilities of its integrated propulsion system approach, and underscoring advantages of the company’s technology roadmap across a range of propulsion applications.

CFM International’s LEAP-X1C and the COMAC C919

The initial program win, announced in 2010, places Nexcelle as a key partner on the world’s first truly integrated propulsion system – with the company to supply a highly capable nacelle, thrust reverser and exhaust system for the new CFM International LEAP-X1C engine on China’s COMAC C919 jetliner.

Innovative features include an advanced inlet configuration, the extensive use of composites and acoustic treatment, and an electrically-operated O-Duct thrust reverser.

The LEAP-X1C integrated propulsion system was conceived through the side-by-side working relationship of Nexcelle and CFM.  Nexcelle is a 50/50 joint venture of Middle River Aircraft Systems and Aircelle, whose GE and Safran parent companies also own the 50/50 CFM International joint venture.

GE’s Passport and the Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000

Nexcelle subsequently was selected to provide the nacelle and thrust reverser for GE’s new integrated powerplant, named Passport, which will power the new Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000 business jet aircraft.

Features of the nacelle include a one-piece extended aluminum inlet lip-outer barrel for reduced aerodynamic drag; an innovative anti-ice system that uses a directed flow nozzle concept; and a 360-degree, single-piece extended composite inner barrel incorporating advanced acoustic protection for lower engine noise levels.

It also will incorporate a simplified composite fan cowl that allows for improved maintenance and reduces system weight; along with a target style thrust reverser with a fixed nozzle to provide lower weight and reverse thrust efficiency, as well as movable kicker plates that enhance thrust reverser performance in direct mode.

Studies to incorporate additional technologies in the Passport nacelle system will continue through the joint development phase of the aircraft program.
